KOLLU PARUPPU - HORSE GRAM DAL

Kollu paruppu is an authentic kongunadu recipe which is cooked in all our homes atleast once a week.. Kollu which is called the horse gram in english is a natural fat burner which helps to reduce the fat in our body and hence helps in weight loss.. I always wonder how our ancestors incorporated science behind everything ..all we have to do is follow their foot steps blindly and we can lead a very healthy life .. there is an old saying called " Elaichavanukku ellu, koluthavanukku kollu" which means those who want to gain weight,have to take sesame seeds in their diet, and those who like to reduce their weight, have to eat kollu or horse gram dal. The recipe is very simple and we can make it within half an hour including its cooking time.. Those who are in diet or in the process of losing weight can have this dal twice a week and can see the results for yourself.. The only concern with kollu is that it produce heat in the body so try to drink more water when you are taking this dal..

INGREDIENTS

* Horsegram (kollu paruppu) - 1 cup ( wash it with water twice)

* Brinjal - 2 ( cut into even cubes)
* Tomato - 1(chop roughly)
* Garlic - 8-10 pods
* Dry red chilli- 4 nos
* Green chillies - 2 nos
* Curry leaves- 2 strips
* Fresh coriander leaves - 2 tbsp ( chopped)
* Coriander and cumin seeds - 1 tsp (crushed)
* Gingelly oil - 3 tbsp
* Small onions -15
* Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
* Salt - as required
* Water - 2 cups
* Tamarind - a small piece (soaked)
* Asafoetida - a pinch

 METHOD

In a pressure pan or cooker, add washed kollu, 2 cups of water, chopped brinjals and tomato, garlic pods and pressure cook for 5 whistles and simmer it for 5 mins as horse gram take time to get cooked.

I have used clay pot in this recipe to get that authentic flavour.. Heat a clay pot or vessel of your choice, add oil, when heated add pinch of asafoetida and the crushed cumin and coriander seeds and saute it for 30 seconds, caution to be taken to not burn the spices..

Add in the small onions, red chillies, green chillies and curry leaves and saute for 2 mins till the onion gets translucent ..

Add in the cooked horse gram dal, turmeric powder and salt and let it boil for 5 mins in high flame.Turn off the stove and cool it completely.. Transfer the contents to a mixie jar and further add, a small piece of soaked tamarind(to increase the self life), some fresh curry leaves and coriander leaves .. It gives wonderful aroma to the dal..

Thats it your kollu paruppu is ready to eat.. Serve it hot with rice..For kids you can add a spoon of ghee, it will enhance the taste and your babies will gobble it in no time.. Hope you all liked this authentic kongu nadu dish.. give it a try for sure and get back to me through comments.. Until next post Veni here saying bye and take care ..Happy cooking !!!
